ICE7122 - The Wider Context in Higher Education

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Critically evaluate the wider context which influences UK higher education;
Critically analyse the drivers which are used to measure the effectiveness of higher education in the UK;
Critically analyse the cultures and customs in UK higher education;
Synthesise data to critically evaluate personal practice in higher education teaching.

Content:

This module will examine the wider higher education context. This context will include: the Teaching Excellence Framework; the Research Excellence Framework; employability; student satisfaction; retention; internationalisation; quality assurance; bids for external funding; equality and diversity. The assessment will be a portfolio including a 3000-word account of professional practice which aligns with Descriptor 2 of the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) and four observations of practice. This will require participants to reflect on how the wider HE context influences their professional practice.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Teaching will be through student-led enquiry, active learning and collaboration. Taught sessions will be supported with material which is uploaded onto Moodle.

The portfolio will include:
• a 3000-word account of their own professional practice to evidence achievement against UKPSF Descriptor 2;
• four observations of practice;
• an action plan.
