CYP4052 - Professional Development and Placement 1

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Recognise the employability skills required to work in a relevant field, identify current personal skill sets, plan for personal/professional development, demonstrate an understanding of the programme level aims and objectives and relevant ethical issues;
Successfully conclude a professional placement demonstrating an awareness of the appropriate skills, qualities and professional standards required, including analysing performance and reflecting on practice;
Reflect on the relationship between university-based learning and placement experience.

Content:

This module will involve three stages: portfolio preparation, an LTU wide two week intensive placement preparation block and a five week professional placement. The three phases include the following:

PORTFOLIO PREPARATION – Semester 1 and 2
The contents of the portfolio and deadlines are contained within the module handbook and are assessed by the module tutor. This stage will typically involve lectures, workshops and weekly directed learning activities to support the preparation of a portfolio of evidence. The portfolio will typically include: CV and other evidence of professional and employability skills; planning for personal and professional development; evidence of successfully securing an appropriate professional placement; reflections on university based learning and evidence of understanding of programme level aims and objectives.

UNIVERSITY WIDE TWO WEEK INTENSIVE PLACEMENT PREPARATION BLOCK – Semester 2
Successfully engage in the university wide two week intensive placement preparation block which will typically include: guest speakers, lectures, workshops, individual / group activities and directed learning activities.

FIVE WEEK PROFESSIONAL PLACEMENT BLOCK – Semester 2
Successfully undertake a five week professional placement including weekly reflections and weekly contact with your progress tutor and module tutor.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Series of lectures and workshops, followed by a 7-week block placement. The 7 – week block placement is split into a two-week intensive placement preparation block followed by a five week placement in a relevant placement.

PORTFOLIO (70% of module marks) – Semester 1 and 2
The contents of the portfolio and deadlines are contained within the module handbook and are assessed by the module tutor.

PLACEMENT (20% of module marks) – Semester 2
The placement performance (7 week block) is assessed by the module tutor, progress tutor, the 2 week intensive placement preparation assessor and in liaison with the placement provider. The assessment will be based on a pass/fail basis with a pass requiring at least 75% of all two week intensive placement preparation tasks to be completed successfully and the successful completion of the five week placement block. A pass will lead to the full award of 20% towards the final module mark. A fail in the two week intensive placement preparation tasks will contribute 0% to the final mark. A fail in the five week placement block will contribute 0% to the final mark.

DIRECTED ACTIVITIES (10% of module marks) – Semester 2
Directed activities: these consist of weekly tasks that must be completed and submitted for inspection at timetabled sessions each week. The assessment will be assessed on a pass/fail basis with a pass requiring at least 75% of all weekly tasks to be completed successfully. A pass will lead to the full award of 10% towards the final module mark. A fail in directed activities will contribute 0% to the final mark.

Students must pass the practical placement component in order to pass module
