SED7906 - Educational Leadership Development

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate a critical knowledge and understanding of the theoretical and practical challenges facing leaders and the key factors involved in managing change in an educational context.
Develop the skills needed to undertake a leadership role in an educational context.
Identify and clearly communicate the rationale, plan and implementation for a quality improvement project they have undertaken to improve provision in a given context.
Demonstrate a critical understanding of relevant theoretical frameworks relating to leadership styles and skills and assess their applicability to aspects of professional practice.
Critically reflect and analyse their personal leadership style/s within a given context.
Critically reflect on how effective their own practice is in an educational context.

Content:

This module provides opportunities to reflect upon and develop a deeper understanding of climate, culture and values with particular reference to the context of education. It is designed for people who wish to develop their potential to work in leadership in education, and is aimed at helping to prepare them for this by providing opportunities to reflect upon their own leadership style and values, to reflect upon the skills and knowledge needed to become an effective leader in their educational context and to evaluate their progress so far. Participants will be encouraged to develop a self-critical approach to their leadership development by the on-going evaluation of their leadership experiences via a reflective journal. It also aims to provide opportunities for the practice of leadership skills and the opportunity to share experiences. The module provides each participant with the opportunity to review and reflect on a contextualised issue for educational leadership and to design and implement a quality improvement project which will produce real impact upon their individual organisations and upon their own developing leadership skills.

• Sector issues and headlines and managing the media in an educational context

• Research skills and project design

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will include specialist tutor input, small and whole group work and discussion, one-to-one coaching, learning conversations, action learning sets, practitioner project/enquiry, workshops, presentations, guest lectures/speakers, mentoring work/shadowing, visits to other schools/colleges, on-line networking, role-play, interview and panel , one-to-one coaching and interview feedback, general practical tasks, fieldwork, seminars/meetings and independent study as appropriate. Reflective practice will be facilitated in taught sessions and supported by tutorials and online forums on the college VLE. Support will be available for the preparation of the work based assignment on the Leeds Trinity University VLE.
Participants will be expected to draw on their own professional experiences and relevant research in order to contribute to, and lead, group activities.

Further details relating to assessment
Assessment is through a reflective practice assignment. It will address the modules and prigramme learning outcomes and is directly related to professional practice. It provides opportunities for participants to reflect upon, critique, and investigate research, policy and practice as it impacts on their professional practice.
Portfolio - An analytical critical response to a collection of recent and relevant articles and papers on an agreed educational leadership issue, accompanied by a reflective journal.
Project – Design, deliver and review a leadership skills in practice improvement project underpinned by an academic literature review in a chosen area or for a chosen issue.
Individual Presentation – Leadership skills in practice – An individual presentation linked to your leadership development in context.

All Individual components must be passed to gain an overall pass in the module.
