MFC5462 - Practical TV (on and off set)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of how to make the most effective use of different filming locations
Demonstrate an understanding of how to investigate a filming location
Attain the practical skills to plan for a shoot on location
Demonstrate an understanding of how lighting and sound are used in a variety of television genre
Develop the skills to work in multidisciplinary teams in order to produce a finished piece of television

Content:

During the module students will build on their practical experience at level 4 to look all aspects of filming on location, from pre-production research and investigations or ‘recces’ to the actual filming. They will learn about the potential problems of location filming, ranging from dealing with the public to coping with thunderstorms. Industry speakers will be brought in to help students understand how to choose between location filming and filming in the studio. Students will also learn how to use equipment on location (including lighting) effectively and safely and how to make the most of the natural environment they are operating in.

In the second half of the module (after their placement period) students will focus on a multidisciplinary project working with students from other programmes to produce a 10-minute television programme. Other students involved will include History and Creative Writing students who will provide research and scripting inputs, while Televsion Production students will consider technical aspects of producing the film, including location, lighting and sound in order to create the required atmosphere and emotion.

Further details relating to assessment
Within the TV production portfolio there are three separate elements:
Documentary - 30% of the Semester 2 marks.
Individual Critical Evaluation - 60% of the Semester 2 marks
Short Promotion for the documentary - 10% of the Semester 2 marks.
The module cohort will work with students from other programmes in Semester 2 to utilise their research and scripting skills to produce a short, finished film. They will then critically evaluate the process of working within a multidisciplinary team.
