MFC4072 - Film Industry 1: Hollywood and Beyond

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of major historical developments in the film industry and explain the role of different types of organisation and processes;
2) Demonstrate basic skills in written communication (essay);
3) Demonstrate basic skills in group work and oral presentation
4) Demonstrate basic research skills

Content:

The module provides an introduction to the historical development of the film industry. It examines a number of developed and developing countries and explores Hollywood in depth. It addresses topics such as the processes and organisations involved in production, exhibition and distribution; funding and public policy; control, regulation and censorship; marketing, promotion and advertising; audiences and cinema-going.

Students will examine and analyse a variety of texts and other sources of information and undertake basic research exercises. Using a market research or other similar exercise, the module also enables students to practise and apply skills for group work and oral presentation.

Further details relating to assessment
The Directed Activities consist of weekly tasks that must be completed and submitted for inspection at timetabled sessions each week. The assessment will be on a pass/ fail basis with a pass requiring at least 75% of all weekly tasks successfully completed. A pass mark will lead to the full award of 10% towards the final mark. A fail in directed activities will contribute 0% to the final mark.
