MBF7202 - Financial Strategy and Business Operations

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Discuss potential strategic financial objectives and the relationships between and constraints on the elements of financial strategy.
Critically evaluate the financing requirements of an organisation and strategies for meeting those requirements. Critically evaluate opportunities for merger, acquisition and divestment.
Evaluate procedures for investment projects and investment choices (UK and international), calculate returns and forecast performance.
Understand and explain the role of treasury management, business ethics and corporate social responsibility.

Content:

The module aims to develop an advanced understanding of the strategy and operations of businesses as organisations and associated financial management (and accounting) functions. It includes: strategic financial objectives of an organisation – formation, congruity and external restraint/regulation; identification of financial objectives and current and forecast performance, variations in economic and business factors; alternative financial strategies, pathway analysis and goal reformation; long- and short-term financing for organisations, risk factors and stakeholder requirements (including the notion of corporate social responsibility and business ethics), weighted average cost of capital, funding specific investments and tax strategies for management of working capital; evaluation of investment projects (domestic and international), external considerations and returns analysis, capital rationing systems and potential investments; treasury management and systems of financial analysis and control; financial and strategic implication of mergers and acquisitions (UK and international markets), terms and post transaction value and processes, demergers and divestments; control of investment projects, evaluation of investments in other organisations and intangible assets and calculation of returns.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The sessions will be organised in mainly 2.5-hour teaching blocks. Lectures will deliver core theoretical frameworks, followed by seminar discussions and workshops.
