On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate competence as journalists operating within professional news rooms and news teams.
A minimum of four consequtive weeks placement with a professional news room (or news rooms), to perform newsgathering, news processing and related tasks as directed on behalf of the host organisation. Appraisals to be conducted by the host organisation in discussion with, and moderated by, university staff. A typical student will complete six weeks of placement in total.

The Employer Appraisal Form requires the host organisation to rate the student on a six point scale from point A (an excellent contribution) to point F (a very unsatisfactory contribution).
Grades A – D will constitute a pass in the module; grades E and F will be recorded as fails.
During the period of the placement, student progress is monitored by the module co-ordinator and, where possible, students are visited at their placements.

The substance and assessment of this module is influenced by the requirements of the industry accreditation bodies, the National Council for the Training of Journalists and the Broadcast Journalism Training Council.
