FSL5412 - Organising & Managing Sport & Physical Activity

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of school-community sport and physical activity in theory and practice
2 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding in event organisation and planning including ethical issues and risk management;
3 Plan, implement and critically evaluate an event;
4 Demonstrate oral and written presentation skills through activities and reports;
5 Demonstrate skills needed to work individually and within a team.

Content:

PE and School Club Links Strategy. PE initiatives: festivals, off site activity e.g. swimming, after school clubs, holiday activities, outdoor and adventurous activities. Health and Safety. Organising and managing school-community based sport or physical activity events. Event Management: needs assessment; compiling a budget; identification of personnel; resources and event requirement. Identifying tasks and ethical issues for event management. Communicating event management structure. Detailing a plan and timescale. Establishing control systems. Planning an event – proposal presentation, preparation, issues relating to team work, risk management, implementation and recovery. Marketing an event using a variety of sources. Implementation and evaluation. Debriefing. Report writing and presentation skills using ICT.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module will build on the theory discussed in Level 1 Children, physical activity and health, providing the opportunity to consider their knowledge and put it into practice. Students will be further guided by theory in the early part of this module to then use in event planning and in the implementation of an event. In addition, students will practise key subject and transferable skills through an oral presentation regarding their proposed event/activity.
