SHN6712 - Applied Sport Psychology

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of psychological factors affecting participation and performance in competitive sport and health and fitness-related physical activity;
(2) demonstrate knowledge, understanding and critical evaluation in the selection process of specific psychological skills for performance problems;
(3) offer advice to performers and their coaches on psychological methods of optimizing performance.

Content:

Performance profiling and the role of the sports psychologist.
Sports psychologists: framework for working with athletes.
Applied techniques:- motivational techniques – goal setting; stress management/anxiety training, attentional/concentration control training.
Improving group dynamics: leadership, cohesion
