SHN6202 - Physical Activity and Behaviour Change

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Identify the role of exercise behaviour specialists within contemporary society.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of psychological factors affecting participation and performance in health and fitness-related physical activity.

Demonstrate knowledge and ability in order to offer advice and support to individuals in relation to positive health choices. Identify successful techniques to encourage the individual to initiate and sustain such positive health behaviours.

Facilitate small community based group work involving active learning. Critically evaluate the progress of individuals and small groups in relation to any health behaviour changes. Critique current interventions for active living.

Content:

Roles, responsibilities, professional competences of roles such as a Health Trainer.
Exercise Psychology and Behaviour Theory: The basis for active living; Theoretical health behaviour models; Environmental change framework to promote positive health; Motivation and Adherence; Strategies to enhance and support motivation and adherence; Critique of current activity interventions.
The physical environment and how it affects our health and wellbeing
Self Reflective Practice: Ethical considerations, The process of health behaviour change, Successful health behaviour strategies in real life settings.
Community based practical individual and group work to encourage positive health behaviour - initiation and progress.
