SHN6112 - Nutrition and Health Policies

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Demonstrate a critically appraise key recommendations of government reports.
Have a comprehensive background and rationale for nutrition and health policy.
Understand the implementation of strategies developed to address requirements of health policy.
Demonstrate knowledge of health needs throughout the lifecycle.
Evaluate and communicate a policy strategy to a target audience.

Content:

National perspectives on health strategies and their implementation. Focus on sub populations including the elderly, school children, infants, pregnant and lactating mothers. Approaches to high risk behaviour e.g. drinking, smoking, overeating. Consideration of policies of local and national level concerning cardiovascular disease, cancer, obesity and other metabolic disorders.

Lectures and workshop style. Guest speakers to support the understanding of different health strategies.
