SHN5622 - Promoting Nutrition/Community Fitness

Objectives:

On completion of the module students will be able to:

1.
a) Evaluate the role of health professionals and nutrition education needs of target groups;
b) Design and plan a programme of nutrition education for a target group.

2.
a) Evaluate the physiological validity of commercial fitness programmes;
b) Evaluate the quality of health and fitness facilities, classes and instructors;
c) Plan and teach a circuit training class, an exercise to music class or conduct a weights room induction.

Content:

The role of public health nutritionists in the development of initiatives to address health issues such as: diet and cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes mellitus, protecting children’s health, the effects of low-income on nutrition.
Planning nutrition education programmes.
Review of guidelines for exercise prescription.
Fitness and health screening: special concerns e.g. asthma, diabetes, pregnancy, young and third age participants.
Evaluation of commercial programmes and quality instruction.
Circuit training, exercise to music and resistance training

001 Case study written report 1 x 2000 words (end of sem 1) 50%
