On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Classify sporting activities and analyse the information processing demands of sporting activities
Demonstrate an understanding of a range of factors which influence sports performance
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the nature of, and influences on, physical growth and the development of fundamental motor skills
Use observation, measurement and statistical tools to analyse the development of fundamental motor skills
Identify ethical considerations in research. Undertake preliminary data analysis and demonstrate an understanding of quantitative research methods
Understanding motor performance:
definitions of skill and ability and systems of skill classification
information processing models of motor performance
factors affecting motor performance (e.g. arousal)
measurement of performance and evaluation of the talent prediction process
Motor development:
practical exemplars from contrasting sporting activities
physical development during infancy and childhood and the effect of nutrition and activity
children’s physiological responses to exercise and the effect of training
assessment of growth and the development of fundamental motor skills
use of descriptive statistics and inferential statstics to present data
The module uses lead lectures to introduce theoretical content that is supported through practical sport activities to establish a link between theory and practice. Further, seminar sessions are used to support theoretical understanding.
Online support is used throughout in the form of forums, reading and quizzes.
