SHL6432 - Youth Sport/Young People and Health

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) demonstrate knowledge of the social and cultural factors affecting young people’s participation in sport and leisure activities
(2) make a critical appraisal of a selection of initiatives from relevant government and non-government agencies concerned with sport and leisure provision for young people in Britain
(3) demonstrate an awareness of the potential use of theoretical perspectives in developing an understanding of the current status of young people’s participation in and attitudes toward sport and leisure
(4) discuss the health needs of young people and the influence of a range of agents and agencies on health behaviour
(5) critically evaluate National Curriculum Guidance and government-led health promotion initiatives
(6) evaluate a range of health campaigns in areas such as substance use and misuse, sex education, family life education, safety, health-related exercise, food and nutrition.
(7) plan a health promotion project for young people.

Content:

Social and cultural factors influencing young people’s participation in sport and leisure. Government and non-government initiatives aimed at enhancing lifestyle behaviours of young people in Britain. Theoretical perspectives on sport and leisure participation. Equal opportunities for young people - race and ethnicity, gender, inner city and disabled policies. The role of sports development in promoting positive experiences.
Delinquency and deviance amongst British youth. Health needs of young people 5-18, National Curriculum guidance, Government strategies, the Health Promoting School, health education approaches and resources, health topics such as substance use and misuse, sex education, family life education, safety, health-related exercise, food and nutrition, personal hygiene, environmental aspects and psychological aspects of health education. Project planning.
