SHL6362 - Community Sport /Leisure Management

Objectives:

On completion of the module students will be able to:

1.
a) demonstrate an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of community sport development officers and community exercise promoters;
b) make a critical appraisal of relevant Government and non-Government agency policies, e.g. Sports Council, Governing Bodies, local authorities, national and regional health organisations and institutions; lottery project approval.
c) evaluate community sport and exercise initiatives such as the National Junior Sport Programme, GP referral activity schemes.
d) plan a community sport or exercise development initiative.

2.
a) demonstrate an understanding of the particular principles and techniques found within leisure and recreation management.
b) assess critically the management of particular facilities or events.
c) demonstrate awareness of linkage between theoretical perspectives and practical activities within leisure and recreation management.

Content:

Semester 1 Community Sport and Exercise Development
Roles and responsibilities of sport and exercise development officers.
Sports Council policies: sports development continuum, target groups, focus sports, equity, Youth Sport Trust, Health Education Authority initiatives, GP activity referral schemes.
Case studies, problem solving, campaign planning and evaluation.
Preparing a sports development plan.

Semester 2 Leisure and Recreation Management
Content will be drawn from: A definitional framework of leisure and recreation and their roles within society. Generic and particular management skills and techniques. Legal considerations and obligations facing leisure and recreation managers. Research, policy and practice in leisure and recreation management. Management theory and how this is related to service delivery within leisure and recreation.
