On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Demontrate a critical understanding of the complexity of modern sport to support understanding of media sports coverage (reporting)
2. Demonstrate knoweldge and critical understanding of current sporting issues from a range of academic disciplines
3. Plan, carry out and analyse findings from primary research on specific sporting themes using a number of different academic disciplines.
The module provides a critical examination of some of the main issues found in modern sport (for example drugs mis-use, discrimination based on ethnicity, gender, or disability, and factors affecting performance). This module provides an opportunity to explore a variety of contemporary issues using a range of academic disciplines, such as sociology, physiology and legal studies, and analyse how each discipline offers a specific insight into modern sport and assists in a critical understanding the athlete, the self and the wider society.
The module will develop a range a range of reseach skills including the practicalities and importance of conducting a literature review, data analysis, interviews and focus groups.
The module uses learning and Teaching methods and allocates time as listed below. Recruitment of 40 students is assumed.
