SEDM2022 - Diversity and Learners

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Systematically understand research, national frameworks and practical knowledge in relation to development, learning, inclusion and the management of behaviour.
2 Critically reflect on and analyse the impact of their understanding on outcomes for children and young people through their developing professional practice
3 Critically reflect on and analyse the impact of different teaching learning strategies on different groups of children and young people
4 Demonstrate a command of their curriculum area in professional practice in relation to development, learning inclusion and management of behaviour.
5 Critically evaluate their own practice.

Content:

This module will focus on three main areas, that is, how children and young people develop and learn, the management of children’s behaviour and inclusion issues. This will include:
• Aspects of children’s and young people’s development: the individual, family, community and school contexts
• Understanding barriers to learning: socio-economic background, ethnicity, special needs, language, behaviour, etc.
• Inclusion: meeting the needs of all learners, teachers’ attitudes and values
• Responding to learners’ needs: developing a positive safe and effective learning environment; effective teaching and learning strategies; collaboration and team working
• Reflecting on school and national policy and frameworks
• Developing action research, observation skills

Learning and Teaching Information:

Autumn Year 2

The module will be delivered in a range of ways including; workshops, tutorials – face to face and/or on-line, tutor led input, coaching from school-based colleagues, flexible learning materials, electronic support including VLE-based materials, email and computer conferencing.

These options will be offered in various combinations as appropriate to participants’ circumstances and preferences as well as the availability of resources. Support will be particularly focused upon: developing learning outcomes; encouraging reflection; facilitating access to resource material to support learning; helping to identify sources of and evidence of learning; advising on the structure for presenting work for assessment; relating learning to a wider context.
