By the end of the course students will be able to:
1 demonstrate a systematic understanding of theoretical models and recent research on management and leadership, and criteria and methodologies for evaluation of effectiveness;
2 demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of a range of types of school performance data and of how to interpret and use such data to inform strategic planning;
3 critically evaluate theories and recent research on strategies for staff management and development;
4 demonstrate the ability to select and apply relevant theory and research to evaluate its impact on practice within a school context;
5 provide evidence of meeting relevant National Standards for Advanced Skills Teachers.
Students will learn about legislative frameworks, theories and recent research on management models, and criteria for evaluation of management systems.
They will review approaches to strategic planning and explore how to collect and interpret and misinterpret a range of types of school performance data.
Students will evaluate differing approaches to staff management and undertaking staff reviews and review techniques and strategies for undertaking a school based critical evaluation of an element of management practice.
Students will study aspects of leadership development, including recent research on leadership styles, action learning and leadership pathways in schools.
Teaching will be by seminars and small group tutorials with the use of exemplars/case studies to match participant requirements according to subject, age phase and management/leadership experience. Group and individual tutors will support the preparation of the work based assignment. Ongoing reflection on college-based sessions and relevance to the work context will be facilitated by tutorials and online forums on the college VLE.
