PSY5052 - Seminal Studies in Psychology

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Evaluate what constitutes a seminal study in psychology
Evaluate the contribution of the studies to contemporary psychology theory
Evaluate the methodological strengths of the studies
Relate the findings and implications of the studies to Level 5 core psychology

Content:

This module asks students to examine and evaluate the contribution of influential studies to the respective fields in psychology. This module aims to complement and enhance the core Level 5 modules. Semester 1 also serves as an introduction or ‘taster’ of Level 6 module options to assist Level 6 module selection.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module is delivered through a series of lectures and discussion opportunities. Lecturers with expertise in the field will deliver each study. Consequently, a range of teaching styles and approaches will be experienced.

Students permitted to take a half module for the award of 10 credits will be assessed on the basis of 1 x 2400-word essays.

Other relevant matters
Students will develop a range of study skills including: small/large group discussion, gathering information, comparing different points of view, evaluation of ideas and theories with reasoned argument and support, critical thinking, essay writing with academic references.
