PED6851 - Researching Assessment for Formative Purposes

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a range of approaches to assessment for formative purposes
2 begin to analyse complex situations concerning human learning and development in particular contexts, including their own learning (A1)
3 demonstrate a creative and constructively critical approach towards innovation, being prepared to adapt their practice where benefits and improvements are identified (T6)

Content:

This is an independent study that draws upon knowledge, understanding and skills addressed in a number of earlier modules in the professional studies programme including:
• development and learning
• pedagogy
• assessment for formative purposes (AfL)
• research and study skills

Students work in collaboration with school-based colleagues in carrying out a small-scale ‘action research’ study whose focus can reflect school curriculum development projects in learning, teaching or assessment for formative purposes.

The study involves the formulation of a research question, data collection, data analysis, and evaluation.
