On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 Demonstrate an understanding of the complexity of the interaction between learning and contexts, and the range of ways in which participants (including learners and teachers) can influence the learning process.
2 Demonstrate a critical understanding of the diversity of learners and the complexities of the education process.
3 Demonstrate the ability to accommodate new principles and understandings.
4 Demonstrate the ability to reflect upon their own and others’ value systems.
This module will build on knowledge, concepts and content from CSC1.
The aim of this module is for students to gain deeper insight into the individual child, how they develop and any challenges to learning that they may face.
Identifying individual needs and approaches to support needs
… Awareness of conditions experienced by children with identified specific needs eg. physical needs, behavioural needs, linguistic needs (English as an additional language) and specific learning needs eg. Dyslexia, ADHD, Asperger’s syndrome, more able / Gifted & Talented and how these may manifest themselves in the classroom.
… Identifying needs and evaluation of the approaches to support specific needs, eg. the role and responsibilities of the SENCo / Inclusion co-ordinator, use of Code of Practice for SEN, role of adults – SLAs, parents, specialists, etc.
Safeguarding – To include an introduction to child protection, identifying signs of abuse, categories of abuse and the roles and responsibilities of adults in school eg. Child Protection Officer. Issues around the use of multi-agency working and recording and reporting abuse.
Meeting needs of vulnerable groups – Exploring issues related to diversity and inclusion, meeting the needs of all children including those with EAL, and recognising and overcoming barriers to learning, to include looked-after children, refugees / asylum seekers, GRT children.
Whole school issues – Examination of policy and practice in, eg. managing challenging behaviour and bullying, and holistic themes such as Healthy Schools, Education for Sustainable Development and pupil voice through Personal, Social & Health Education, school councils, etc.
This module will address the following 2012 teaching standards; 7. Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment; 8. Fulfil wider professional responsibilities
Workshop sessions will involve trainees in practical activities involved with teaching and learning and evaluation. Lectures will involve trainees in interactive discussion and analysis of sources and key concepts. Tutorials will involve trainees in small group and individual discussion focusing on analysis and synthesis.
