PED5392 - National Curriculum Core 3: English, Mathematics and Science

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. demonstrate a secure knowledge and understanding of their subjects/curriculum areas and related pedagogy to enable them to teach effectively across the age and ability range for which they are trained to teach (Q14)
2. make effective personalised provision for those they teach including those for whom English is an additional language and how to take practical account of diversity and promote equality and inclusion in their teaching (Q19) (Q10) (A1) (A2) (T1) (T6)
3. question concepts and theories encountered in their studies
4. Recognise the processes of learning in children, know pedagogical approaches that impact upon children’s learning and reflect upon them within the context of scientific enquiry (R2)
5. Communicate and present written arguments (T1)

Content:

The English component of this module has a number of key strands.

First, it revisits narrative composition – this time with particular reference to 7-9 year olds and children for whom English in an additional language. The main texts studied are traditional stories from a variety of cultures. A range of teaching and learning contexts, strategies and resources are demonstrated and evaluated.

Second, theory and research into language comprehension is a focus. This is also highlighted by means of a focus on story-telling and drama strategies that are effective in meeting the needs of literacy learners for whom English as an additional language (EAL).

Third, the module revisits spelling and examines the phonological, morphemic and orthographic routes to spelling.

Fourth, students are required to analyse and assess children’s reading and narrative writing attainments in the later years. Models of planning and assessment for formative purposes are demonstrated in preparation for school-based training.

Examining in more detail different strategies for planning, including thematic and curricular links.

Develop personal knowledge of the Science content: Scientific Enquiry, humans as organisms and relationships to PSHCE , forces and energy, electricity and materials
Knowledge of the National Curriculum for Science
Develop knowledge of the range of strategies for assessment in science and recognise their impact on teaching and learning
Develop knowledge of the range of investigation types within the Later Years
Recognize the role of questioning within teaching and learning and relate to relevant learning theories
