Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of the regulatory framework attaching to the news media in the UK
2 Demonstrate a critical awareness of the complexities of determining and achieving ethically informed behaviour in the context of journalism practice
3 Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of the structures and processes of local and central government in the United Kingdom, the relationship of British government to the European Union, and the mechanisms for journalist access.

Content:

Regulation including Ofcom, PCC and NUJ. Issues of ethical standards in the performance of journalism.

The structures, functions and operations of local and central government in the UK e.g. the British Constitution; separation of powers; legislative process; the Treasury; local councils, their budgets and responsibilities; rights of reports, etc.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Lectures, seminars, and tutorials supported by individual private study. Attendance at no less than one session of a local council or parish meeting.
