MFC4042 - Mapping the Media Landscape 1

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. demonstrate basic understanding of the nature and scope of the media industries;
2. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the historical circumstances of the emergence, development and convergence of different media;
3. demonstrate knowledge of some of the key organizations, roles and figures in the media;
4. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key political, ethical and cultural questions that are raised by changes in the media landscape.

Content:

The module is a survey of the media landscape. Students will explore various media in order to understand their past, present and possible future. The first semester will consist of a series of lectures delivered by subject specialists through which students will learn about specific industries. The second semester will explore particular roles within the media industries and also familiarize students with some of the major players – both in terms of organizations and individuals – who have helped to shape the media.
