MFC4012 - Professional Development and Placement - Media, Film & Culture 1

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Compile a presentable dossier of material explaining work and other experience relevant to job applications
(2) Undertake a personal skills audit and prepare an action plan in response to it
(3) Apply knowledge and skills in the work situation to a satisfactory standard
(4) Analyse the aims, structure and activities of a specific organization or other structured professional experience

Content:

1) A professional development programme of weekly sessions, with special reference to the audio-visual and cultural sectors. The programme will comprise
- assembly and updating of CV and other professional documentation;
- career entry, sector and job analysis, function and roles of Sector Skills Councils and other professional bodies;
- role play activities to develop interview skills;
- briefing on EPO procedures and arranging placements;
- interview with Placement Tutor;
- introduction to organisational analysis and corporate communications;
- introduction to profiling and self-understanding.

(2) Placement with suitable organization(s), normally six weeks in total

(3) Reflection on and evaluation of placement.

Additional assessment information
A numeric mark will be returned for this module but students must pass both pass / fail elements of assessment in order to pass the module overall.
Students must pass the module in order to be eligible to progress to Level 5 as this module is not eligible for condoned failure.
Normally a student will be ineligible to undertake the placement without satisfactory completion of the pre-placement programme and the required submission of CV and placement registration form / placement details to the Employer Partnership Office.
The placement element of assessment is normally of 6 weeks duration and may comprise an external placement or other structured professional experience which meets the learning objectives of this module and involves an equivalent workload. In either case, the placement will be the subject of explicit agreement between the student, supervisor, module co-ordinator and the EPO.
