Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 critically analyse the nature of the operations environment and explain its relationship to other functions of a business organization
2 Identify and select the most appropriate tools and techniques for the effective management of operations management activity and for solving operations problems
3 demonstrate technical competence in the application of appropriate tools and techniques within the operations setting
4 evolve, design and develop appropriate operations policies to address both tactical and strategic operations challenges

Content:

The role of operations, the transformation process, services versus product oriented organizations. Identification of important and trivial issues.
Control of function, value and variety. Use of the product life cycle concept as a review tool.
Techniques for improvement of processes.
The contribution of operations to corporate policy and development of operations strategy.
Process choice. The management of capacity and demand. Techniques for plan and control.
Purchasing, supply chain management and materials management.
Total quality management and lean thinking – concepts, tools and techniques.
Aspects of service and service quality.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Module delivered in a 2 hour block by a mixture of lectures, case studies, in class activities and discussion.
