Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 analyse the variables which impinge on policy choices within the field of HRM;
2 critically evaluate the policies and techniques applied to the management of human resources in a variety of organisations;
3 assess the effect of HRM policies and practices on organisation and individual performance;
4 demonstrate systematic understanding of the role of HRM policies and practices as an agent of and an adapter to change in organisations.

Content:

The aim of the course is to provide students with insight to the work of the personnel/human resource specialist in organisations and an understanding of the contribution of HRM to the performance of organisations.
It is the responsibility of management to make policy decisions in this field which translate into procedures, processes and techniques applied to the management and work of people in organisations. Such policies, procedures, processes and techniques are based on theoretical concepts about how best to manage people.
The course will examine these issues and consider the extent to which theoretical and practical applications contribute towards the attainment of organisational and individual aspirations. It will examine the techniques which are widely found in organisations and which contribute much of the basis of professional HRM practice.

Learning and Teaching Information:

A two hour teaching block is used each week and is comprised of a formal presentation followed by issues for discussion, examination of case studies etc to reinforce practical application of lecture material.
