JOU6202 - Off the Field:The Business of Sport

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate a working knowledge of sports issues off the field
2 Critically evaluate the diverse nature of factors affecting the reporting of sport.
3 Interrogate and provide an academic analysis of some of the key areas affecting sports reporting.
4 Apply presentation skills to convey complex sports themes in a clear and coherent manner
5 Demonstrate ability to work as part of the team

Content:

This module will cover contemporary issues in the sports industry today, including the creeping advertiser; ambush marketing; sponsorships; endorsements; taxation/revenue/funding; business of staging multisports events including bidding; administration/ownership; legal grey areas (Fifa, doping); and vested interests related to technology in sport. Content will be weighted according to issues making the headlines.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Some of the sessions will be delivered by experts from the industry who will be invited to contribute based on their areas of expertise. The module co-ordinator will seek out these individuals and will assume overall control for the direction of the content.

Semester 1:
10 timetabled workshops followed by exam

Semester 2:
4 timetabled workshops followed by guided group study before presentations

Additional assessment information

1) Standard practice for open book exams is that students will be allowed to bring a reasonable amount of material with them into the room to aid in their analysis of their chosen question – in this case, three options will be offered based on the themes of the semester.

2) The groups will be allowed to choose their own topics. They will be strongly advised to make use of ICT and social media in their presentations. Groups with original sound, video, images and evidence of social media engagement will be rewarded for their efforts.

Assessment:

001 Open book exam 1 x 3 hours (end of sem 1) 50%
002 Group presentation, plus individual critically reflective report 50%
