On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Apply knowledge and skills in college-based news days and perform to a satisfactory professional standard
Critically reflect on the structured professional experience provided by news days and evaluate performance in order to structure and personal and professional development plan
Apply and demonstrate an understanding of the laws and legal restrictions governing reporters
Apply and demonstrate an understanding of regulatory regimes governing broadcast journalism
1. A professional development programme, typically two day-long events, with special reference to the journalism sector. The programme will comprise:
– reflection on the nature of work and ethical issues related to it;
– development of group work and team building;
– interviews with Placement Tutor
2. The Law element (Semester 1) in the PDPM module will build on and enhance the study of Law from Level 1, and will normally include topics such as reporting restrictions, contempt of court and defamation.
3. An in-house live broadcasting period at the beginning of Semester 2, in both radio and television – outward facing, and using all the industry conventions associated with reporting, production and broadcasting.
4. Critical reflection and evaluation of this period of news days.
This module is taught via 1 hour interactive lectures, designed to ensure students understand the key aspects of defamation law and compliance issues prior to their involvement in the semester 2 news days, as well as a series of professional development and employability seminars, where students are given access to key employers and professionals to inspire them as they prepare for the semester 2 news days. The Centre for Journalism takes a dynamic and innovative approach to news days, taking care to replicate industry standards and to ensure student broadcasts are public-facing.

An overall numeric mark will be returned for this module.
Students must pass all elements of assessment in order to pass the module overall.
The news days will be spread across 6 weeks and will comprise at least 140 hours in order to meet BJTC requirements. They will comprise a variety of live broadcast exercises normally based at Leeds Trinity. In addition all students are required to take an active part in the multimedia reporting of Journalism Week.
