JOU5124 - Broadcast Journalism

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Devise and produce television and radio news artefacts utilising production and technical skills effectively
Demonstrate the ability to analyse their work in the context of industry-standard radio and television news production
Reflect critically on their knowledge and understanding in a written format
Demonstrate the ability to work productively as a member of a team

Content:

The module runs over two semesters. In the first semester, students will be introduced to both radio and television equipment of industry standard. They will learn key news writing and production skills.
In the case of television, they will learn how to shoot and edit and construct a television news package using appropriate writing and interviewing skills. In radio they will learn how to interview effectively, how to script and file voice pieces, and to edit, process and cue audio material for inclusion in news bulletins.
In the second semester, they will move on to utilise those skills. In the case of television, they will move on to a longer-form feature piece, using more sophisticated shooting and editing skills, along with more complex structures in terms of packaging a television feature. In radio they will produce news packages and compile bulletins against deadline ahead of a period of live newsroom operation in conjunction with a community radio partner. All students will experience the roles of newsreader and bulletin editor in a live situation.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module is taught via a series of interactive workshops which use innovative and creative teaching methods in order to foster student engagement and develop practical skills. The focus is on student-centred practice, using a broad range of simulated and live news exercises which allow the cohort to use their practical skills in safe environment where they benefit from tutor feedback and mentoring on an on-going basis.
