HIS6732 - History Research Report

Objectives:

Objectives for assessment 1 - Methodology Chapter:
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

(1) Put into practice and further develop the skills of planning historical research attained at previous levels (ie presenting a hypothesis or identifying a problem; summarizing relevant historiographical debates)
(2) Plan the research methodology for their report by locating, reviewing and selecting primary sources to be used for research; formulating a viable research methodology that employs the relevant historiographical debate and describing how the primary sources might be used in order to test the hypothesis).

Objectives for assessment 2 - The History Research Report:
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

(1) complete a sustained piece of research based upon an analysis of a reasonable body of primary sources, using the research methodology they have developed in semester one to test the hypothesis they have constructed.
(2) Write up in a coherent, logical, and well-argued manner, and presented with appropriate ancillary material and supported by full scholarly academic apparatus, a report that summarises their primary source research finding and makes comment on the relevant historiography.

Content:

Students will define a topic of their choice in consultation with the appointed member of the History staff, the topic being dependent on staff expertise and availability. The research will be based predominantly on primary sources. These might include: documents and texts; a body of oral history interviews that the student has conducted in a rigorous manner; visual and physical evidence such as paintings, artifacts, buildings and landscape. In addition, students will need to demonstrate historiographical knowledge and an understanding of theoretical approaches and contextual factors relevant to the specific topic. Students will formulate a proposal; conduct a detailed investigation of the topic; and complete a sound, and coherently argued essay; appropriately presented, and supported by scholarly apparatus.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will be supported through taught group sessions, and personal (one-to-one) tutorials with a supervisor.
