HIS4792 - Intro to Modern World History

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) demonstrate an awareness of the key historical developments of the twentieth century;
(2) show an understanding of how these events have shaped the modern world;
(3) discuss long term processes of change and stability;
(4) give a brief presentation with aid of powerpoint software (or equivalent);
(5) Report briefly on independent research in the form of an essay.

Content:

This module takes and overview of the history of the world in the twentieth century. It considers the significant events, individuals and material developments in the chronology of twentieth century world history. It explores a number of themes in the history of the last century, such as the balance of power and the world order; the rise of ideological conflict and the cold war; war, its nature and impact, international organisations and the world order, the global environment, globalization and global culture.
