Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 demonstrate knowledge and understanding of psychological factors relating to health behaviours, e.g. self esteem, peer pressure, locus of control and theories of behaviour change
2 evaluate school and community health promotion initiatives
3 identify resources available to support health promotion in schools
4 plan, implement and evaluate a health event

Content:

Psychological factors and theories: health belief model; transtheoretical model; self esteem; locus of control; significant others.
Health promotion initiatives, e.g. Active Playgrounds, ‘Watch it’, ‘Cool Dudes’.
Curriculum resources, e.g. DfES ‘Wired for Health’, BNF Healthy Schools, PSHCE materials.

Planning, implementing and evaluating health events

Learning and Teaching Information:

Lectures, discussions and workshops over 6 weeks will prepare students to implement a health event in the following half term

Work-based tasks
Contact hours: 24

Assessment:

001 Oral presentation & written plan 15 mins 750 words (end of module) 30%
002 Report 3000 words (6 weeks after module) 70%
