FSL5132 - Promoting Inclusion

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) describe inclusion in its broadest sense and examine critically how policy and practices within the institutionsupport or hinder inclusion;
(2) explain and evaluate the application and impact of the legal framework for Inclusive Education, Race and Disability Legislation and Equal Opportunities
(3) apply strategies for differentiation and promotion of fair inclusive practices in order to provide effective support for all learners.

Content:

An overview of developments from segregation to inclusion and factors that influence inclusive policy and practice e.g. globalisation, media, politics, finance, legislation, research, attitudes, prejudice and discrimination
Government guidance on Inclusive Education, provision of effective support services, staff roles and responsibilities.
Models of effective support and a range of enabling strategies. Listening to the views of learners.
Mechanisms to ensure learners’ progress is supported and monitored: IEPs etc.
Supporting the learning needs and raising achievement for learners from a range of backgrounds.

Learning and Teaching Information:

At Level 5 it is expected that students will know and understand the essential mechanics of HE study and be able to work more independently in resourcing and researching their learning. Work at Level 5 will emphasize the application and analysis of theory and develop the skills of critical reasoning.
A key learning and teaching strategy in this module will be how to structure a group presentation\
This module will run over 6 weeks

Assessment:

001 Poster presentation 1 x 1000 words (during week 4) 30%
002 Analytical case study 1 x 3000 words 70%
