Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Demonstrate an understanding of the role of play in early development and learning
(2) Research and describe differences in cultural and social perspectives on play
(3) Identify key theoretical perspectives on play, the language of play and the role of play in learning
(4) Plan play activities relevant to a given age group identifying objectives and expected outcomes

Content:

This module introduces students to a range of relevant theory related to play. The role of play in the development and learning of children from 0-8 years will be examined and debated.

The module will include a study of:
• Related theory including from a range of cultural and social perspectives
• Toys and how they relate to development, stereotyping, role play, learning etc.
• Observations of children at play and how these can inform about a child’s social, personal, physical and cognitive development
• The language of play

Within this module, students will be expected to demonstrate academic communication skills through reporting case study evidence and relating this to relevant theory.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will be through a range of lectures, workshops and tutorials. Students will be expected to draw on a range of sources including their own working experiences. Group discussion and tasks will form a significant proportion of the College based learning to develop relevant analytical skills. Students will record their development within a Personal Development Log.
