FDA5002 - Play and Early Learning

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
explain the role of play in early development and learning.
investigate and analyse differences in cultural, social and international perspectives on play and related ethical considerations.
identify key theoretical perspectives on play and summarise the role of play in effective pedagogy.
propose planned play activities relevant to a given age group.
produce effective written debate composed with reference to sources from electronic databases

Content:

This module introduces students to a range of theories related to the role of play in the development and learning of children within the early years. The module will include a study of:
• early learning theories including a range of cultural and social perspectives;
• current curricular guidance
• the role of play in the holistic development of children;
• the use and developmental influences of toys and activities.
• parental partnership for learning through play
• effective planning, assessment and observation techniques, including safeguarding
• making and recording observations of children at play
Within this module, students will be expected to demonstrate academic communication skills through reporting case study evidence and relating this to relevant theory. The module will develop confidence in reference to journal databases and in planning structures of written academic work.

Learning and teaching will include a range of methods such as lectures, e-working, workshops and tutorials, with emphasis on team experience and peer support, large and small group discussions, problem-solving activities, individual and paired working.
Students may be expected to draw on a range of theoretical/academic, personal and work-based resources. Course documentation, support materials and web-based materials will be available on the VLE as appropriate.
Study skills will continue to be developed. During the course of each session there will be opportunities for tutor/student interaction to meet individual needs and help develop skills, confidence, competence, knowledge and understanding relating to the aims and objectives.
Students will continue to maintain their Personal Development Log during this module and on-going self-evaluation will be part of the students’ identification of needs.
