ENG6542 - Literary Period: 20th Century Literature

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) demonstrate detailed knowledge of a range of twentieth century texts;
(2) analyse and discuss selected texts in terms of their relation to particular social/cultural debates of the period;
(3) analyse and discuss texts from the period in terms of the relations of content to form and literary genre;
(4) analyse and discuss texts from the period in terms as appropriate of ‘Modernism’ and ‘Postmodernism’;
(5) write critically and sensitively on topics of their choice, drawing on a wide range of reading.

Content:

Students will develop an overview of the period of "modernism", through a range of representative texts and reflect on modernism and postmodernism as foregrounded against concepts such as realism and authenticity, modernity and postmodernity. Students will focus initially on such topics as the supposed uniqueness of modernist texts, the changes modernism has made to the later reception of verse and narrative, and some parallel movements in the sister arts. Students will then go on to examine literary varieties of postmodernism in the socio-historical context of the post-war world.
