SHN6702 - Eating Disorders/Gender, Age and Nutrition

Objectives:

On completion of the module students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the nature and underlying psychopathology of eating disorders;
2. Critically appraise theoretical explanations for the aetiology of eating disorders;
3. Demonstrate an understanding of approaches to diagnosis and therapy;
4. Analyse, report and evaluate a semi-structured interview;
5. Demonstrate knowledge of biochemical and physiological characteristics of males and females in relation to nutritional requirements through the human life span;
6. Demonstrate an understanding of factors relating to gender and age related nutritional disorders

Content:

The nature of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating syndrome. Psychological, social and cultural theories of the aetiology of eating disorders. Approaches to therapy. Family dynamics. Nutritional and physiological factors relating to children’s, men’s’ and women’s health. Women’s health from the psychological perspective. Nutritional requirement through the life span of males and families. ender specific behaviour eg alcohol consumption, food supplementation. Nutritional adaptation in growth, pregnancy, starvation/dietary restriction and exercise. Calcium and bone health. Breast and colon cancer. Coronary heart disease, Obesity.
