SHN5662 - Research Methods/Nutrition and Exercise

Objectives:

On completion of the module students will be able to:

(1) Demonstrate an awareness of a range of qualitative research techniques;
(2) Dppraise the use of a range of research skills and techniques in investigations into sport, health, exercise and nutrition;
(3) Plan a small scale research project;
(4) Demonstrate an understanding of body composition, energy balance and metabolic rate;
(5) Demonstrate an understanding of the aetiology of osteoporosis, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease and obesity;
(6) Evaluate the role of nutrition and exercise in the prevention of the above disorders.

Content:

Ethical considerations in qualitative research. Questionnaire-based research; observation-based research; interview-based research. Record keeping and data processing; presentation of results and report writing. Critical evaluation of research papers. Planning small scale research. Body composition; introduction to human metabolism; work and energy; energy requirements and energy intake; Food consumption trends in the UK, nutritional consequences of dietary trends. Socio-economic differences in food consumption. Risk factors and aetiology of nutrition related diseases including hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis. Prevention of nutrition-related health problems through diet and exercise.
