On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
(1) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the core sociological and psychological concepts of health
(2) Identify how health is experienced by different social groups
(3) Evaluate the key social and psychological determinants of health
(4) Search, analyse and evaluate information on contemporary health topics
(5) Collaborate and discuss contemporary health issues to generate reasoned solutions
Semester 1 introduces core concepts from sociology and psychology in health and wellbeing such as diverse approaches to health, socioeconomics and health and theoretical models of health interactions. Semester 2 focuses on contemporary health topics such as alcohol and drug misuse and mental health. Students then consider specific health interventions through case studies and problem-based learning.
Students will typicall experience twenty sessions in total. The first ten will involve a one hour lecture and a one hour seminar (seminar every fortnight). The second semester will comprise of one hour lectures followed by student group work involving problem based learning and presentation workshops.

Assessment
In semester 2, students may negotiate their mode of report eg: information sheet plus oral presentation written preparatoin for meeting; report of debate.
