On completion of the module students will be able to:
(1) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the changing definitions of health, illness and disease and their relationship with socio-cultural factors.
(2) discuss the health needs of young people and the influence of a range of agents and agencies on health behaviour.
(3) critically evaluate National Curriculum Guidance and government-led health promotion initiatives.
(4) evaluate a range of relevant health topics such as drug use and abuse, sex and relationships eduction, family life education, safety, health-related exercise, food and nutrition.
(5) make a critical appraisal of selected health promotion policies for young people.
(6) design and plan a health promotion initiative.
Holistic definitions of health, socio-cultural factors affecting health of young people. Health needs of young people 5 – 18, National curriculum guidance, Government health strategies, the Health Promoting School, health education approaches, evaluation of health education resources, the role of parents, peers, siblings, media and health promotion agencies; health topics such as, substance use and misuse, sex and relationships education, family life eduction, safety, health-related exercise, food and nutrition, personl hygiene, environmental aspects and psychological aspects of health eduction.
Roles and responsibilities of health promoters. Function of Health Development Agency and study of selected current policies selected.
Identification of health promotion needs and priorities. Review of case studies. Problem solving. Principles of planning a campaign on chosen topic.
