SEDM2002 - Dynamics of Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Draw on a range of sources of evidence to undertake a critical enquiry into the relationships between learning and teaching
2 Demonstrate a critical understanding of the role of assessment in learning and teaching
3 Select and interpret relevant classroom data and use this to inform personalised learning pathways for a range of pupils
4 Critically reflect on how research into an aspect of learning, teaching and assessment has impacted on their own professional practice

Content:

• Sources of evidence that inform the nature of learning and the nature of teaching, and their interdependence.
• Critical evaluation of the purposes of assessment: AfL, APP.
• Critical evaluation of a range of assessment strategies, eg: formative and summative assessment; oral and written feedback; teacher questioning.
• Sources of data to inform learning, teaching and assessment.
• Sources of data for the setting of personalised learning pathways for pupils, and the effective use of such data.
• Critical reflection on issues of learning, teaching and assessment in own professional practice through evaluation of case study and research evidence.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Spring Year 1

The module will be delivered in a range of ways including; workshops, face to face tutorials, tutor-led input, coaching from school-based colleagues, flexible learning materials, electronic support, including VLE-based materials, e-mail and computer conferencing.

These options will be offered in various combinations as appropriate to participants’ circumstances and preferences as well as the availability of resources. Support will be particularly focused upon: developing learning outcomes; encouraging reflection; facilitating access to resource material to support learning; helping to identify sources of and evidence of learning; advising on the structure for presenting work for assessment; relating learning to a wider context.
