SEDM1083 - Special Educational Needs

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate a critical awareness of models of disability and the resulting impact on perceptions of SEN
2 Critically evaluate the historical, sociological and political issues related to integration and inclusion and the personalised learning agenda
3 Critically review the policy and procedures for identification and planning to meet individual learning needs
4 Critically review an intervention plan for an individual or group of pupils with SEN in light of theoretical and legislative expectations
5 Provide evidence of meeting relevant National Standards for an Excellent Teacher.

Content:

Students will develop a critical understanding of the models of description used to discuss educational needs, impairment, disability and ability. Special educational needs (SEN) will be considered from historical and legislative perspectives. The module will provide an overview of the relationship between Standards, the personalised learning agenda and Every Child Matters agenda and pupils with SEN and what constitutes effective inclusion for the individual. Students will develop critical perspectives on models for managing inclusion; supporting needs within inclusive schools; what constitutes choice, advocacy and self-advocacy. The role of the special school will be considered.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will be through a range of workshops, tutorials and seminars. Students will be expected to draw on their own working experiences, current legislation and local policy and practices as well as current research in order to contribute to, and lead, discussions.

Ongoing reflection on college-based sessions and relevance to the work context will be facilitated by the use of online forums on the college VLE.
