PYP6122 - Work Based Research

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate an awareness of key research approaches, their relative merits and drawbacks
2 Evaluate effective research approaches for their profession
3 Critically analyse research undertaken in their field
4 Prepare a proposal for their own research project

Content:

This taught module introduces students to research methodology, how to gather and analyse data, relevant research in their field and how to use this as a starting point for developing their own research proposal.

Key themes include:
• Quantitative and qualitative approaches to research
• Techniques for gathering data
• Ethical issues in research focused on children, young people and families
• Use of national statistics and other data
• Case-study approaches

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions.
