PSY6462 - Counselling and Coaching Psychology

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. Understand and critically evaluate a range of theoretical approaches to psychotherapy and counselling psychology.
2. Appreciate the challenges faced by psychotherapists and counselling psychologists working with different populations
3. Demonstrate an awareness of the relationship between counselling practice and psychological theory.
4. Demonstrate an awareness of the theory underpinning the skills used in the delivery of counselling and coaching.
5. Understand and critically evaluate the psychological approaches to coaching and mentoring and understand the application of these approaches across different context

Content:

Semester 1: Introduction to psychotherapy and counselling psychology. Consideration of a variety of psychotherapy and counselling paradigms. The challenges faced by psychotherapists and counselling psychologists working with a variety of populations.

Semester 2: Wider counselling perspectives including eclectic and integrative, time limited and positive psychology. Wider applications of counselling psychology including career counselling, counselling in the workplace, stress management, unemployment and disability counselling. Introduction to the skills used by psychotherapists, counsellors and coaches. Consideration of broader modes of delivery, for example, group and internet counselling. Introduction to the theory and efficacy of coaching in a variety of contexts.
