PSY6022 - Deconstructing Psychology

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) demonstrate knowledge of the nature of modern psychology;
(2) evaluate critically the conventional model in psychology;
(3) demonstrate an understanding of conceptual and theoretical issues in psychology;
(4) demonstrate an understanding of the construction of Western psychology.

Content:

Positivist and social explanations of science. The relationship between psychology and positivism. Psychology of science. Limitations of the conventional model in psychology. Social constructionism and psychology. Putting social constructionism into practice; recognising the role of language. Changing the discipline. De-constructing the story of Western psychology; heroes, women, experimentation, replication and statistics.
