On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Evaluate the issues arising from the identification of individual needs in very young children
2. Outline key theory related to child development and SEN conditions and how they may be manifest
3. Plan for the inclusion of diverse needs of children in an Early Years setting
4. Examine issues of early identification of diverse needs and the involvement of key personnel
This module develops the students’ Level 1 understanding of child development and applies it to issues of diversity and SEN.
Key Themes include:
• How professionals and parents can identify early needs
• The impact of diversity and SEN on an individual child’s development and learning
• Diversity issues such as bilingualism, giftedness, ethnic diversity and disability
• Planning for the inclusion of a range of children in an Early Years setting
Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions.
