PEH4402 - Athletics, Swimming and OAA

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the aims and content of Key Stage 1 & 2 Athletics, Swimming and OAA. (Q14,15)
(2) construct lessons using clear structure with clear teaching objectives, tasks and teaching points (Q22)
(3) plan lessons which form part of a unit of work (Q22)
(4) write a statement of progression / targets for the Unit of Work (Q22)
(5) understand health and safety issues in Athletics, Swimming and OAA (Q30)
(6) understand how to use the principles of differentiation and progression in teaching Athletics, Swimming and OAA. (Q10,19,20,21)
(7) teach pupils, observe pupils’ performance, intervene in their learning, give them feedback (Q,10,25,27,28)
(8) monitor and record pupils performance (Q11,12,13,26,29)

Content:

Athletics, Swimming and OAA

(1) Develop an understanding of the aims and content of Athletics, Swimming and OAA taught in the primary school and have knowledge of the requirements at Key Stage 3 for these areas.
(2) To understand the key principles in teaching Athletics, Swimming and OAA
(3) Have a clear understanding of Health and Safety procedures with regard Athletics, Swimming and OAA.
(4) Have a clear understanding of procedure in the event of an accident.
(5) Have the opportunity to participate in practical activities which illustrate the principles and ethos of teaching Athletics, Swimming and OAA in the primary school.
(6) Have an understanding of how practical tasks can be progressed and regressed within Athletics, Swimming and OAA.
(7) To understand the need for clear and appropriate teaching points ensuring that pupils are ware of the substance and purpose of what they are asked to do.
(8) To understand the needs for clear and appropriate learning outcomes in Athletics, Swimming and OAA.
(9) To understand how to plan for Athletics, Swimming and OAA., at different stages.
(10) To understand the importance of positive verbal feedback whilst addressing areas for development.
(11) To understand how beneficial Athletics, Swimming and OAA can be for children and also for adults.
(12) Have knowledge of resources available to help primary school teachers to teach good quality Athletics, Swimming and OAA.
(13) Understand how Athletics, Swimming and OAA relate to other areas of the Physical Education curriculum.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module will be delivered through practical workshops. Theory will be covered through practical implementation.
