PEDB362 - Non Core Humanities (Junior Years)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Demonstrate a secure knowledge and understanding of their subjects/curriculum areas and related pedagogy to enable them to teach effectively across the age and ability range for which they are trained to teach.
(2) Demonstrate an understanding of the relevant statutory and non-statutory curricula, frameworks, including those provided through the National Strategies, for their subjects/curriculum areas, and other relevant initiatives applicable to the age and ability range for which they are trained to teach.
(3) Demonstrate an understanding of the content of the National Curriculum for KS 2 and related guidance e.g. QCA units for planning and be able to apply this knowledge in planning for this age range
(4) Demonstrate an awareness of the approaches used in the effective teaching of history at KS1and the content of the national curriculum and related guidance at this level.
(5) Reflect on the importance of history within the primary curriculum and be able to make links between history and other areas of the primary curriculum.

Content:

The history component of the course will include:
• The nature of history and how this relates to the teaching of primary age pupils
• The content of the National Curriculum Programmes of study (at KS1&2 and links to the FS curriculum and KS3) and related guidance including QCA documentation
• Pedagogy for teaching history including the use of artefacts, visual sources, oral, written etc. The use of role play, local fieldwork, museum visits, archaeology etc.
• Planning and assessment (utilising AfL strategies) including reporting, leveling work related to history
Links will be made to other curriculum areas where relevant and to the use of ICT in teaching history. The inclusive nature of history teaching will be promoted throughout. An overview of the teaching of history in the primary school will be provided to facilitate subject co-ordination in this area.

The geography component of the course will include:
• The nature of geography and how this relates to the teaching of primary age pupils
• The content of the National Curriculum Programmes of study (at KS1&2 and links to the FS curriculum) and related guidance including QCA documentation
• Pedagogy for teaching geography including fieldwork, use of ICT (to include video, DVD, digital photography), visual and written sources, photo packs, artefacts, role play and visitors.
• Planning for geography in the primary curriculum and the use of formative and summative assessment.
• Focus will be on the process of teaching geography in the primary school with links made to other curriculum areas where relevant. Issues of diversity and inclusion will be addressed within the taught sessions.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Each session will include a variety of approaches to promote active learning, to reflect those utilised in the primary classroom. These will be undertaken as a whole group, small group, pair or individually. Learning will be supported by reading materials provided in Study and CLARCS packs and via online learning. Assignments and tasks will be scaffolded. When possible input from guest lecturers and visits to local museums etc will be included. Students will be required to undertake directed tasks in preparation for sessions.
