On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
(1) Demonstrate a secure knowledge and understanding of their subject/curriculum areas and related pedagogy to enable them to teach effectively across the age and ability range for art, gymnastics, dance and music.
(2) Demonstrate an understanding of the relevant statutory and non-statutory frameworks including those provided through the national strategies for their subject/curriculum areas and other relevant initiatives applicable to the age and ability range for which they are trained to teach.
Key Stage 2 (7-11 course)
• To have knowledge and understanding of the requirements of art and design, music, gymnastics and dance in the National Curriculum.
• To understand the key principles in teaching art and design, music, gymnastics and dance.
• To have an overview of current issues with regard to art and design, music, gymnastics and dance.
ART
The nature of art, imagination, responding to experiences, expressing and communicating ideas, teaching methods and resources, lesson and unit planning, monitoring and assessing.
MUSIC
The nature of music, teaching methods and resources, lesson and unit planning, monitoring and assessing.
GYMNASTICS, PE and Dance
The nature of PE, health and bodily awareness and using equipment, teaching methods and resources, lesson and unit planning, monitoring and recording pupil performance, safety implications for the programmes of study covered.
Sessions will be taught in practical workshop groups.
